Printed Sources

In the following helpful sources are listed. Sometimes you have to know that a source just exists before you can search it. With these souces it should be possible to proof informations about a family you are looking for.

This list is not complete at all. In case you think a source should be named here just write an email.

Ancestor lists circular & Ancestor lists index

About 800 Ahnenlisten (ancestor lists) with about 150.000 surnames have been submitted for the Anextor lists circular (ALU). The summaries of these lists has been added to the Ancestor lists index (AK) (17 volumes). Ordered by surname you will find time, region, place and the address of the submitter.
As book you can get the AK in a book shop or perhaps at your local library. The AK has been published 1997 on a CD-ROM (more info about that CD coming soon).

 Genealogical Research Directory

The Genealogical Research Directory (GRD) is published once a year. In the main chapter surnames are listed aplphabetical with the following: time period, place (town, county, province, state, country or land), name & address of the researcher. Beyond it addresses of genealogical societites are listed. Each researcher can publish for a small amount the names of the families, he is looking for.
You should get the book in bigger libraries. Bibliographical data (for 1986):

Johnson, Keith A. & Sainty, Malcom R. Genealogical Research Directory. National & International. ISBN 0 908120 56 1.
More information (purchase, publishing your address and data) you can get in Germany at: (coming soon).

 Local Family Books

The "Ortssippenbuch" is a local family book. In there are all data about the persons, who lived in that place. Usually the book is ordered by surname and the data are out of the original sources (church books). At a glance you can get very easy and fast the data. The original sources are treated with care. For the area of Baden-Württemberg there are two series, the books for Baden and the Books for Württemberg.
Beneath the OSB there are "Dorfsippenbücher" (the title means the same, "Dorf" means a little village) also, mostly published during the Third Reich.

If your are looking for your roots you could spare with these books a lot of time and money. If you got german ancestors coming from Baden or Württemberg you should take a closer look at these books. See the List of OSB.

An index of surnames is being built these days: by surname you can get the Ortssippenbuch the surname can be found in. This index is not ready yet.
